Creative Blathering

• It took me two weeks, and I started two weeks later than I had planned, but I have finally finished outlining my creative projects for 2010.

I am constantly "collecting" ideas; some of them come to me in the middle of the night, or while on one of those maze-like Wikipedia journeys, while driving, watching TV, or at any other time. I usually jot the ideas down, make a sketch, or whatever is appropriate. But then I leave them. I always intuitively know, based off of the design or concept, what time of year I want to work on it, and I know when to come back to my notes to "retrieve" the ideas. By that point, I usually refine or embellish or adjust the initial idea in some way. It's as if the ideas percolate in my subconscious and at some point they can be developed into something I'm ready to share.

Imagine, though, all of these ideas collecting throughout the year. So I finally sat down, organized ALL of the ideas, did some extra research, figured out what techniques or lessons I am lacking, figured out the best time for me to do each jewelry update, figured out when/what I want to do in terms of art prints and paper goods. I made a list of additional goals such as re-creating my portfolio site, making a landing page for E & A, finding a second boutique to carry my work, marking dates for when the biggest gem faires are (so I can save up), and dipping my toe into selling at fairs and bazaars.

In terms of upcoming work, I'm strongly focused on wire-wrapping, but I will still always carry my other styles of jewelry. I also have an eye on working with PMC (precious metal clay) because I already have a plethora of ideas for things I could create, but that is a very ambitious undertaking in terms of supplies needed. What I am saying is, it is definitely next in my queue, but I am in no rush to get there. I want to really immerse myself in this wire work for a while because the ideas are bubbling forth at an overwhelming rate. :)

I still have a couple of things in the pipeline that I cannot divulge yet, but I will conform that the BPTP pendants are off, and out of my hands, and I have no idea when Ted is going to release them. Also, I am finally going to follow through with a collection that I researched and planned out in 2007. Yes, you read that right. Remember when I took almost an entire year off when I was pregnant and had carpal tunnel? I planned it all out then, and even made sketches, and I have 100% of the supplies for it. I just... never got around to it, but not for lack of excitement. It is now slated for Summer 2010 and WHOOEEEE I can't wait!

• Today, my 235' of sterling silver wire arrived, which means I can finally finish the last 6 of 21 new wire-wrap designs. I have more of Gail Kops' moon focals which are just as OOAK and breath-taking as the one before these. I also have some of the most stunning labradorite I have ever seen, and a magical periwinkle-plum shade of tanzanite, and I am so in love with matte silver right now that it is ridiculous.

Whirling Wind Moon Art!

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and Black Phoenix Trading Post have released Whirling Wind Moon, the Lunacy full moon perfume oil and tee for January 2010. Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab offers you an olfactory experience like none other, and Black Phoenix Trading Post offers various unique treasures.

I created the artwork for the t-shirt and perfume label:

Swiftly walk o'er the western wave,
Spirit of Night!
Out of the misty eastern cave,
Where, all the long and lone daylight,
Thou wovest dreams of joy and fear,
'Which make thee terrible and dear, —
Swift be thy flight!

Dreams of joy and fear: swirling dark and airy musks, mogra, plumeria, hyacinth, lily of the valley, dry white sandalwood, gardenia, pale amber, and oakmoss.

The tee and perfume oil are available for sale until ~December 5th, 2009.

Have You Been Naughty or Nice?

A recent art project of mine:

Make your plea, or let the dirty denizens of Black Phoenix Trading Post decide for you!

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and Black Phoenix Trading Post have released their 2009 Naughty or Nice Inquisition for which I have created the artwork! Enter a plea and receive a Naughty or a Nice t-shirt plus a corresponding perfume oil. This year they are even including a miniature stocking stuffed with random silliness and an Imp's Ear vial of a scented perfume oil such as Trinket, Tchotchkie, Knick Knack, or Spare Change.

Images in this post are respectfully swiped from the BPTP website. Oops. Does that mean I should plea for the Naughty tee? ;)

Special Elements & Artifacts Announcement!

Introducing a new signature style for Elements & Artifacts: ornate wire wrapping!

Viewing the body of my work over the years, it is easy to see a slow evolution in my art and jewelry designs. Reinventing myself is part of my creative process and something that is integral to my inspiration and growth as artist.

This year, I took a big jump with my art when I bought an Intuos4 tablet and began the process of learning to draw on something other than paper or canvas. It has added a new dimension to my skills and has bridged the gap between traditional fine art and graphic design.

This year, I finally chose to take a bigger jump than usual in my jewelry, and my workspace is now equipped with a bench block and various other tools for hammering and wrapping and oxidizing wire. I've been interested in learning these things for years and I am devoted to learning the techniques that will allow me to make my own mark.

This new metal and wire work can be viewed as another facet to my creations at Elements & Artifacts, and I hope these techniques will be a tool that will add depth and variety while also setting my work apart from similar jewelry artists and followers. The more I expand, the more I am able to articulate my concepts and inspirations so that the feeling or emotion behind something is communicated to you as the viewer. That is my ultimate goal as an artist as I continue to explore what my heart and mind conjure.

Here's to growth and change, exciting new offerings, and a new signature style for Elements & Artifacts! 2010 is going to be a good one while I work to fully claim this new venture. :)

Wanton Voluptuousness

I just barely got my hands on these bottles for which I designed the labels! Black Phoenix Trading Post released a Limited Edition series of Lucy Westenra offerings for Halloween.

Why can't they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble?

Orange blossom and honey.

Rose water and lavender with stargazer lily, white carnation, bois de rose, white iris, violet, and honey.

Denn die Todten reiten Schnell. Black opium poppy, laudanum, blood, and a chaplet of garlic flowers.

LUCY, KISSED (Perfume Oil)
Diabolical voluptuousness, a siren song from the grave: juniper and yew brushing against blackened violets and funeral roses, red musk and hot blood, veined white marble and icy, brittle musk, all pulsing with the sinister, hypnotic scent of patchouli, amber, oude, and cubeb.

I think, by far, my favorite is the Lucy's Budoir spray, but the perfume and the bath oil are tied for second. It is a lovely, dark, and artistic offering, and the label creation was very enjoyable. :)

Sometimes a commission comes along that really captures me, and this is one of those times.

I was asked to make a cuff bracelet out of a viola bridge that had been replaced after about 16 years of use. An object like that can become symbolic in so many ways, representing the love and pain of her art and the work that went into creating all of that music.

She requested that this piece be fairly minimal, so I went with a smooth black chap leather and a blackened snap, then I wired the bridge to the cuff with a darkened oxidized silver wire.

I enjoy all of my collaborations, but this one was such a personal piece and very different from what I usually create, and I am honored to have been able to help her with it.

Holiday Commissions

Please contact me before November 15th if you are planning on getting any customized jewelry made and would like it in time for the holidays! Shipping times to get supplies to me as well as to get packages to you can vary wildly with the holiday rush and I'd like to allow extra time even though most of my commissions tend to be completed in 1-2 weeks.

I will possibly limit the number of holiday commissions I take on if my project load starts to look to big.

I'm working on something really big and exciting to go with my Yule collection and the accompanying Stocking Stuffers. Stay tuned, and save your pennies! :)

A Patch of Pumpkin Keepers

I just created a second run of Pumpkin Keepers since the first run was so popular. With it are new Steam Queen pieces, a revisit of my Day of the Dead earrings, and a couple of whimsical amber necklaces which gave me the opportunity to play with some of my new Grade A amber briolettes. Enjoy!

You can view the new work at Elements & Artifacts!

The other day I stumbled upon these adorable little coffee cup cozies!

Instead of using the cardboard cup sleeves offered at local coffee shops, use the re-usable bat cup sleeve! I tested the bat cup sleeve with hot liquids and it effectively protects your hands and insulates your drink, plus the fabric is amazingly soft and the stitching shows a fine attention to detail.

It is nearly Autumn, and a handful of days later, October! Thus, I have completed my Halloween set for 2009. I stumbled upon idea after idea, and before I knew it, my collection was nearly two times larger than normal. I even set aside over a dozen ideas to save for next year!

Here are a few highlights, and the rest are for sale at my website! Coming soon: new printed note cards with my artwork, art prints, steampunk and victorian grunge jewelry, and then my Yule collection!

StarGazing WoodElf

I was asked if my Symbols art print could be featured in StarGazing WoodElf's blog, and of course I said yes! Go here to read it!

This piece is many years old, and it was actually one of those stream-of-consciousness pieces where I just scraped and scraped then immediately began the copper etching process before I could allow myself to think too much about it. It's a mish-mash of symbols and the elements.

BPAL + Neil Gaiman + Art

Last week I was busy creating some website artwork for the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab site. The art is a combination of hand-drawn ink and vector drawing. Since the new art went up on the website with last night's Lunacy update, I am now able to share some screencaps here. :)

First, we have a little skully scroll at the top and bottom of the left navigation bar.

Then there is the scroll work for the new Neil Gaiman landing page.

I also created the images for the Anansi Boys and American Gods sections. Anansi Boys features an abstract take on Anansi's "story weaving", and American Gods features Mr. Wednesday, or Odin, with shadows of some of the Gods from the novel.

Chrysanthemum Stone

Congratulations to Kate W., who is our winner of the Septembris contest!

I received a couple of correct guesses for Chrysanthemum Stone, but the majority of you guessed Bloodstone. I have never worked with that stone before, though I am familiar with it. Perhaps I need to acquire some for future projects, eh?

There will be at least one more contest listed here before the end of the year so keep your antennae up! I will also be posting a Black Friday and holiday sale the day after Thanksgiving. Stay tuned!!!

Atlantis Rising

I just found out that my Atlantis necklace was featured in this lovely oceanic Treasury! :)

Elements & Artifacts Autumn Collection!

I finished my autumn collection! Autumn is the highlight of my year, followed closely by Halloween and Yule, so this was a dream to create and photograph.

My Halloween collection will be up sometime between the first day of Autumn and October 1st, and I promise my resin leaf pendants will be in that update since they didn't make it into this one. :)

Feel free to contact me if you need something reserved or held until payday, or if something you love has been sold.

Autumn's Branch
Tangled branches of shadow
wrinkle crisp lines in
the September air.

Autumn Sun
The autumn sun burns brightly, a running flame through the mountains, a torch flung to the trees.

Black Oak
Listen ...
With faint dry sound,
Like steps of passing ghosts,
The leaves, frost-crisp'd, break free from the trees
And fall.

Sugar Maple
Listen ...
With faint dry sound,
Like steps of passing ghosts,
The leaves, frost-crisp'd, break free from the trees
And fall.

The oak sleeps in the acorn.

Indian Summer
The Indian Summer is said to be the dead summer's soul, returned in autumn with a final blaze of warmth.

Never have I seen a more breathtaking array of autumn colors than in the full bloom of a chrysanthemum.

Revel in the bounty of this harvest, which is also a festival of the wine deities. As such, it is also a time of mischief and merrymaking!

Middle summer; the first harvest.

Autumn's Lullaby
Sleep away the night
As leaves fall beyond your window.
Gold and red swirls of delight,
Where the feet of Autumn dance,
Faerie-like on the ground,
With whistling winds blowing round..

The rest are at!!

Septembris Contest!

What if a necklace like this could be yours for free? The winning prize of this contest is a variation of the necklace shown below, with the same antique brass chain and maple pendant, but a different gem stone. Can you guess the stone?

Your hint is that it is named after an autumn flower that is often said to facilitate the slowing and enjoyment of time.

Send your guess to by noon PST on August 28th! Please place Blog Contest in the subject line. Correct guesses will be entered into a randomized drawing for the prize!

Good luck!
